9L@30 R&D Week
November 5th – 12th 2011

One of the ways of working with the model depicted in the Nine Ladies logo is to use the three outer triangles to represent the phases in a woman’s life. Traditionally these were seen as the period leading up to the loss of virginity, the child-bearing years and the period after menopause, but in modern society these divisions are not clear-cut. Women can now have sex for years after losing their virginity without becoming pregnant, find fulfilment by pursuing their own interests or careers rather than through motherhood and delay menopause through hormone replacement therapy.

In Nine ladies we have looked for ways to describe these phases that are of relevance for
modern women. We have used the word ‘single’ for the phase when a woman is learning to define herself as an individual and engage with life on her own terms, the word ‘involved’ to describe the phase when she has responsibilities that require self-sacrifice, and the word ‘independent’ for a subsequent phase of self-reliance and completion. It would be useful to have a range of ages among the participants on the week to reflect these.

In the logo the three outer triangles share a border with the inner triangle. They feed into it and draw from it. During the week we will explore ‘singularity’, ‘involvement’ and
‘independence’ in relation to this inner triangle. What does this space represent? And what does it signify that the triangle is empty?
